Emergency Department (ED) Volunteers stationed in the main waiting room serve as the first point of non-clinical contact for patients and visitors. From their designated “Ask Me” station, volunteers provide clear, compassionate communication and wayfinding support. Working closely with the triage and registration teams, they help enhance the patient experience through presence, attentiveness, and assistance with basic non-medical needs.
Key Responsibilities:
Patient & Visitor Communication
- Offer general information about ED processes (e.g. triage procedures, wait time expectations, next steps.
- Answer common non-medical questions about hospital amenities, parking, and visiting hours.
- Support a calm and respectful waiting room environment through approachable, professional presence.
Wayfinding & Navigation
- Provide directions to locations within the hospital (e.g. cafeteria, washrooms, pharmacy).
- Guide visitors as needed and provide information on accessible services.
Administrative & Registration Support
- Assist the registration team with paperwork distribution or collection, when requested.
- Help identify patients who may need support completing non-confidential sections of forms.
Operational Duties
- Monitor and round up wheelchairs to ensure a consistent supply at the ED entrance.
- Deliver paperwork or small items between the front area and treatment spaces as requested.
- Be available to assist with sitting with stable patients who are waiting for support or transport (non-clinical companionship only).
Position Notes:
- Volunteers remain stationed behind the Plexiglass at the "Ask Me" booth unless directed by staff to complete specific tasks.
- Volunteers do not provide medical advice, updates on patient status, or enter clinical spaces unless specifically requested by staff.
- This is a patient-directed role, meaning volunteers respond to incoming questions and needs rather than engaging in self-directed tasks.
- Volunteers must maintain confidentiality, uphold boundaries, and escalate concerns to staff immediately.
Requirements:
- Volunteers must be 18 years or older.
- Completion of hospital volunteer onboarding, including orientation and health clearance.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to remain calm under pressure in a fast-paced, sometimes emotional environment.
- Physical ability to walk, push wheelchairs, and remain seated or standing for periods of time.
