A Milestone in Women’s Health: OBSP Lowers the Age for Mammogram Self-Referrals to 40.

October 01, 2025

Last October, Ontario expanded the Breast Screening Program (OBSP) to allow women over 40 to self-refer for mammograms, without a doctor’s referral, and women aged 30 who are considered high risk.

Women can get screened even if they have no breast cancer symptoms or history of breast cancer. Early detection significantly improves outcomes since mammograms can catch tumors at a stage when they’re small, less likely to have spread, and easier to treat.

If you are between the ages of 40 to 74, the OBSP encourages most women in this age group who decide to get screened for breast cancer, to get screened with mammography every 2 years.

At Queensway Carleton Hospital (QCH), we believe in empowering women to take proactive steps for their health. This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we are spotlighting a powerful change that makes it easier than ever for women to prioritize their well-being.

To show what it’s really like, our VP and CIO, Lindsay Wyers, celebrated turning 40 with her first mammogram. She was even featured in an honest vlog about this quick, 10-minute appointment. Watch it here.

Mammography at QCH is made possible through donor support. Together, we are working to bring a new Digital Tomographic Mammography Suite to Queensway Carleton Hospital. This advanced 3D imaging technology allows our care teams to identify changes earlier and more accurately, so they can act quickly and improve outcomes. With your support, patients will have more time, more options, and a greater chance for a positive outcome.
