Inpatient Care
The renovated inpatient unit at the Barbara Crook and Dan Greenberg Mental Health Centre now includes 28 private rooms and therapeutic spaces, providing a safe environment for patients in acute mental distress. There is a common lounge flooded with natural light, monitored access to a secure outdoor courtyard, an exercise room, a group treatment room and a comfort room to support emotional regulation. The expansion added a separate area with four individual patient rooms for those who require closer observation during stabilization.
Designated a Schedule 1 facility under the Mental Health Act of Ontario, patients may be held involuntarily or agree to a voluntary admission. Patients are encouraged to work jointly with the interdisciplinary team, which can include a psychiatrist, registered nurses, social workers, occupational therapists, a recreation therapist, and a general practitioner.
Visiting hours are 4 - 8 pm on weekdays, and 12 – 8 pm on weekends and holidays. Subject to change. We recommend calling the nursing station prior to visiting. Inpatient mental health reception: 613-721-2000 ext. 2860.

Outpatient Care
The outpatient care space includes areas for one-on-one appointments; two large group rooms; a clinic for medication administration; and a kitchen for therapeutic groups. Outpatient mental health reception: 613-721-2000 ext. 4708
Outpatient Assessment and Treatment
Assessment, medication monitoring and support services for adults (17+) living with serious mental illness are provided by psychiatrists, social workers, registered nurses and an occupational therapist. Referral from a family physician is required for psychiatric consultations - Access MHA referral form.
Social Work
Social Workers provide support to individuals who are dealing with emotional, mental and/or social challenges. They provide one-on-one counselling, psychotherapy and practical support to improve coping strategies and connect individuals to community resources.
Day Treatment Program
The One Step Transitional Day Treatment Program is an eight-week group program designed to support people taking steps towards transitioning from the hospital to the community. The program focuses on stabilization, recovery and growth, promoting the use of skills to improve individuals’ functioning and connection to social supports. The program is staffed by an interdisciplinary team that includes a registered nurse, social worker, occupational therapist and recreation therapist.
Participants must be over the age of 18 and attend four days per week (Monday to Thursday) for two hours per day for eight weeks.
Working with Emotions
The Working with Emotions group is an eight-week group program that runs once per week for 90-minute sessions. The primary objective of the group is to assist individuals in becoming more efficient in regulating their emotions and managing their interpersonal interactions. The main components of the group are emotional regulation, distress tolerance, mindfulness and interpersonal skills.
Medication Clinic
The medication clinic is for medication administration, monitoring and support including RN assessment for outpatients on Long-Acting Injections, Community Treatment Orders, Clozapine treatment/monitoring.
Emergency Consultation
Psychiatrists and Crisis Nurses provide consultation services to QCH's Emergency Department and to our smaller partner hospitals in the region.
Consultation Liaison
Psychiatrists and a registered nurse provide consultation services to other inpatient units (provided by the on-call psychiatrist off hours for urgent requests).
Outreach Clinic
Psychiatrists provide telemedicine clinics to Arnprior & District Memorial Hospital and Carleton Place Memorial Hospital for consultation, assessment, and follow up.
Teaching
All disciplines are involved in providing clinical placements for students/residents from various academic institutions.
Community Links
The program has numerous linkages with community partners and representation on regional groups. The QCH Mental Health Program is a partner in the Recovery Connections program through which peer and family support workers provide support to people in hospital experiencing mental health and/or substance use issues and their family and friends.
