Queensway Carleton Hospital’s A3 Unit Achieves Designated Stroke Unit Status

Ottawa, ON – October 1, 2025 – Queensway Carleton Hospital (QCH) is proud to announce that its A3 unit has officially been recognized as a Designated Stroke Unit (DSU) by CorHealth Ontario.

 

A Designated Stroke Unit is a hospital unit where patients diagnosed with a stroke receive care from a dedicated, specially trained, interprofessional team.

This model of care is proven to improve outcomes, reduce complications, and support better recovery for stroke patients.

 

QCH has long provided high-quality stroke care, and this designation reflects years of commitment by our nursing, physician and allied health teams. Becoming a Designated Stroke Unit allows QCH to highlight the care its always provided to our stroke population, aligning with the Ministry of Health’s stroke care strategy.

 

What this means for patients:  

  • Stroke patients admitted to QCH will now be collocated in a dedicated section of the A3 unit with 11 newly-designated stroke beds.
  • Patients will benefit from enhanced, coordinated care delivered by a specialized team.
  • This designation allows for automatic consideration for stroke rehabilitation programs, further supporting recovery.
