Turning the Page in Kanata

October 12, 2022

This week, the hotel-turned-hospital in Kanata will shut its doors after two years serving the community.

In April 2020, the Fairfield by Marriott Kanata hotel and Queensway Carleton Hospital (QCH) partnered together to develop an offsite hospital inpatient unit at the hotel, where patients could continue to receive the care they needed from QCH staff in the comfort of the hotel-turned-hospital, while making more space available at the hospital.

“We’re in the business of taking care of people,” said Dave Fowler, General Manager of the Fairfield Kanata. “That doesn’t change when the reason that brought you to our doors does. The pandemic tested us all, but I truly believe that if you look for it, the good is there. Our team members worked alongside the hospital staff to ensure every guest – not patient – was comfortable and had what they needed to focus on their own recovery. Taking care of our community has been a wonderfully rewarding experience in our hotel’s history.”

Queensway Carleton Hospital retrofitted two floors of the hotel to meet the care needs of low-acuity, low-risk patients who were able to be safely cared for in an alternate location, while still receiving the quality care QCH is known. It also added an additional 56 beds to the hospital’s total capacity – which was critical to hospital operations. It allowed QCH to increase access to inpatients beds at the hospital itself for other patients with acute conditions who needed them.

“During a time of great uncertainty, our hospital was able to do something we’ve never done before: transform a hotel into an offsite hospital inpatient unit, thanks to our partnership with Dave and the team at Fairfield Kanata,” said Dr. Andrew Falconer, President and CEO of Queensway Carleton Hospital. “We’re thankful for their support over the past two years as our teams successfully worked together to care for people in our community.”

The Queensway Carleton Hospital team will be transitioning to a new off-site location (more details below), while the Fairfield Kanata hotel moves into renovations in preparation for its reopening in Spring 2023.
