Genetic Screening

During one of your first prenatal visits, your healthcare provider will talk to you about screening tests that can be done to help determine if there are any health problems that can be passed on to your baby through the genes of the mother and father of the baby. In Canada, these screening tests are offered to all women and include blood-screening tests for certain genetic disorders and ultrasounds. Other tests may be needed if it seems you are at higher risk for giving birth to a baby with certain types of conditions or medical problems. Ask your healthcare provider for more information about the tests that you may need.
