Areas Served by Volunteers
Queensway Carleton Hospital's more than 600 volunteers provide support to almost every area of the hospital through direct patient contact in patient support programs, providing friendly customer service in the revenue generation programs and providing clerical support in the Administrative areas. When you look in any department, you're sure to see their blue smocks and friendly smiles.
Patient Support Programs
Volunteers in these program areas have direct contact with patients / families and provide non medical support and assistance.
Volunteers distribute books and magazines to inpatients and tidy, exchange and replenish reading materials in the waiting areas. (Operates M – W - F afternoons only.)
Various departments call upon the support of Volunteers to greet patients & families; provide reassurance as well a provide supplemental support to assist the staff with errands. Clinics include: Pre Operative Assessment Clinic (POAC). (Operates weekdays only, 8:00 am- 3:30 pm)
Volunteers assist with refreshments, escort patients or relatives to other areas, and deliver messages. (Operates weekdays 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 am and 10:30 am. to 3:30 pm)
Volunteers provide general assistance and comfort to patients and relatives in the waiting area, act as a liaison person between patients and staff, along with providing general support and assistance to staff with such things as chart pick ups, locating wheelchairs and doing errands. (Operates 7 days/week, including evenings - 9:00 am - 12:30 pm, 12:30 pm - 4:00 pm & 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm.)
Geriatric Day Hospital
Volunteers assist and encourage the clients’ independence while supporting staff with daily programs, i.e., crafts, films, and daily living skills for geriatric outpatients. (Program runs out of Bell Mews Plaza in Bell’s Corners, Monday to Friday, 9:00 am - 12:30 pm & 12:30 pm - 3:30 pm.)
Greeting Post / Information Desk
Volunteers meet and greet the patients/public at the entrance of the hospital, provide way finding directions and deal with general inquiries as well as, assist with phone transfers to patient rooms. (Operates Monday to Friday 8:00 am to 12:15 pm and 12:15 pm to 4:00 pm, 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm and Weekends 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm)
Intensive Care Unit
Volunteers assist the staff by restocking and delivering supplies, along with some basic clerical type duties. (Operates weekday mornings only.)
Mother Baby Unit
Volunteers deliver ice water, assist with menus, sell items from the Maternity Cart, and support staff with running errands, and deliveries. (Operates 7 mornings per week)
Volunteers spend time with and support palliative patients and their families. (A 10-week course is required before participating in this program.)
Patient Care Units (Medical / Surgical / Alternate Level of Care / Rehab & Geriatrics)
Volunteers provide friendly visiting to patients, and carry out activities such as distributing ice water, flowers and refreshment cart. (Operates 7 days/week including evenings - 9:00 am - noon, noon -3:00pm & 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm)
Spiritual and Religious Care
Volunteers spend time with and provide spiritual and religious support for patients (Must have completed a registered training program and be approved and supported in writing by their faith tradition and the Spiritual Care Department).
Volunteers provide patients with the opportunity to purchase items from the Tuck Cart along with providing patients with friendly visiting. (Operates Mon & Wed afternoons 12:30 pm - 3:00 pm, Tues & Thurs evenings 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm and weekend afternoons)
Customer Service / Revenue Generation
Volunteers working in these program areas serve customers, deal with cash and must offer quality customer services, in non-direct patient areas.
Volunteers assist and serve customers in the shop selling gift items, sundries, magazines, flowers, etc. (Operates 7 days/week, including evenings 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm, Weekends Noon - 4:00 pm)
Volunteers sell Hospital Equipment Lottery Project for People “instant win” lottery tickets. (Operates weekday afternoons.)
Programs in these areas support various departments with non-direct patient support function by providing basic office assistance and customer service.
Various departments throughout the hospital call upon support from Volunteers to assist with basic office/ clerical functions such as collating, filing, photocopying, and reception. Areas include; Human Resources, Occupational Health, Finance, Purchasing, Childbirth ACC and Volunteer Resources. (Operates weekdays only - shift times vary)
