Research Ethics Board

Our Purpose

To carry on activities for the purpose of studying, assessing or evaluating the provision of health care with a view to improving or maintaining the quality of healthcare, or the level of skill, knowledge and competence of the persons who provide health care.

  

  1. To review and approve all research conducted at Queensway Carleton Hospital involving use of human subjects, research involving patient records and research involving use of clinical databases.
  2. To review research conducted by members of QCH staff where no external REB exists for review of that research.
  3. To review and approve consent procedures utilized within all areas of the hospital and to ensure, for example, that consents conform to relevant legislation including Consent to Treatment Act, Privacy Act, Mental Health Act, etc. 

Our Mandate

The QCH REB will give final authority for approval of proposed research at Queensway Carleton Hospital and  in addition, will be a “designated Quality of Care Committee” under the Quality of Care Information Protection Act (QCIPA) 2004 and will advise and/or make recommendations to Quality Council, which is designated as the Senior Quality of Care Committee under the QCIPA 2004.

FEES 

The fees described below will support the Queensway Carleton Hospital Research Ethics Board in fulfilling its mandate in the review and monitoring of research protocols as defined by national guidelines in the Tri-Council Policy Statement on Ethical Conduct for research involving humans.


The Research Ethics Board has implemented a $1500.00 administrative fee for all research projects submitted for review, and a $500.00 administrative fee for renewals and major amendment applications. Non-funded studies are usually exempt, and smaller studies may be waived from this REB administrative fee. Under special circumstances the committee will consider requests for fees to be waived or reduced on an individual basis.
