Becoming a Volunteer

What skills and qualities do QCH volunteers possess?

We look for individuals whose own personal values compliment those of the hospital…where respect, accountability and innovation are Hospital values.

We are looking for individuals that have the desire to help others, that are positive, caring, sensitive to the needs of others, are committed to what they take on, are motivated, energetic and customer-service oriented.
Other important attributes include the ability to work well with others, have strong interpersonal and communication skills, and have the desire to learn and grow with the organization.

What kind of commitment is required?

To be able to provide quality services and support to the areas that volunteers serve, we rely on the commitment our volunteers are able to make, therefore we require the following…

  • Adult volunteers are asked to make a minimum commitment of 8 months of service
  • Student volunteers are asked to provide 60 consecutive hours of service and work one shift per week. Students must be 15 years of age and have completed grade 9
  • Regardless of being an adult or student, all volunteers are asked to commit to one shift per week of between two to four hours, depending on the service areas ... please consider if this is a good time in your life to make such a commitment

All potential volunteers are required to attend a Volunteer Information Session and asked to complete a Volunteer Resources application form, along with two written reference forms, provided in the appliction package. In addition to the required references, police screening will be requested as our patients are vulnerable and have special needs.

How to Apply to Become a Volunteer at QCH:

  • Call Volunteer Resources at 613-721-4709 to register for one of our Volunteer Information Sessions, where you will learn about the volunteer programs, expectations and receive an application package. Refer to the Volunteer section for the upcoming Volunteer Information Session dates.
  • Complete and return an application form along with the two mandatory written reference forms. Reference forms can be mailed directly by the individual completing the reference if they prefer.
Once the application and references are received and processed an interview will then be arranged and possible placements will be discussed.
  • Following the interview and we agree to move forward with the process, you will be required to complete the Two-Step Mantox Skin test and provide information regarding MMR (Mumps, Measles and Rubella) and Chicken Pox. The Immunization documentation form will be given to you at the interview. TB Testing and Immunization Documentation is mandatory to complete prior to placement. You must supply a copy of your immunization record which shows you have been vaccinated twice for each, Chicken Pox and MMR (Mumps, Measles & Rubella) OR show proof of immunity to these same diseases through blood work.
  • Attendance at a general Orientation is required and arranged at the interview.
  • Anyone 18 years of age and old a current Police Check will be required and coordinated through the hospital.
  • Once all mandatory steps are completed specific placements will be arranged. A $20.00 refundable deposit for a uniform and photo identification will be required. A refund is issued for the uniform and photo Id when they are returned in good condition at the time of your withdrawal.

Things to Keep in Mind:

  • Submitting an application does not guarantee you will be accepted into the program.
  • The process to become a volunteer has several steps all of which take some time. The intake process was developed to ensure we best serve the patients, staff and the potential volunteer.
